Weekending (Birthday, Baptism, Oscars)

Happy Leap Day!! How awesome to have a bonus day this year. Do you have any plans to celebrate? We will be watching the UNC game with pizza after work.

Last night we watched the Oscars and my best dressed were Chrissy Teigen, Saoirse Ronan, Rachel McAdams, and Alicia Vikander. Tell me, who was on top of your best dressed list??

I am so glad Brie Larson won for Best Actress because Room is my favourite book! I still haven't seen the movie but I loved the book and hope to see it soon. And Jacob Tremblay is so adorable! I love watching him in interviews.

Aside from watching the Oscars, I am excited/ashamed to admit that we watched the ENTIRE Fuller House season. Yup. And I loved every single minute of it. I don't want to spoil anything so I won't go into detail, but I thought they did such a great job honouring the past and making subtle references to the actors' offscreen lives. If you were a fan of Full House, I guarantee you will love it!

Despite how it may seem, we didn't spend the entire weekend watching TV. On Friday, we made a last-minute decision to eat out. Mike was craving Southern cuisine so we went to a new restaurant for fried chicken and biscuits. It was no Bojangles but it was still pretty delicious!

This weekend was my mom's birthday so we went over to celebrate. Unfortunately, my brother was feeling a little under the weather but we still managed to squeeze in a little bit of cake and presents. I love to celebrate my mom and she really deserves it!

On Sunday, we went to my nephew's baptism and he was such a champ through the whole thing! No tears at all. It's also really nice to get together with Mike's side of the family because we don't get to see them as much as we would like to.

I hope you a wonderful weekend!

Five on Friday

So I was supposed to watch as many Oscar-nominated movies as possible before this Sunday. How many have I seen so far? 0. I really wanted to watch Brooklyn, Room (my favourite book!), Joy, Carol, etc. I just realized all these movies have one word titles. I guess that's what's cool these days! Gossip Girl is still eating up all our free time. We are so close to the end (S5!) and we want to finish it before Big Brother Canada starts. Because that's almost a 24/7 commitment with live feeds. Wow. I have no life.

What's the deal with the weather. Seriously. It snowed literally all day yesterday and we got quite a bit. We were definitely spoiled with a mild winter up until now! #overit

We have been talking about upgrading our car recently (our current car is very near-death) and thinking that it makes sense to get something in the mom car (but non-minivan) category. We hope to start a family in the next few years so it makes sense to get something that will work well for little ones. Vehicle shopping is so overwhelming! Between MPG, safety ratings, carseat criteria, and all the other fun features, this girl is overwhelmed. I might need to put up another HELP! post soon.

I created some fun labels for Fortunate House recently! It was time to put on my big girl pants and improve this little site of mine. So now you can click on whatever category tickles your fancy up at the very top! Oh, and I included my instagram feed on the side. I want to continue improving little things here and there but I'm so proud of how far I have come as a blogger! I can't believe it's almost been a whole year!

Around social media:
- I am loving watching Taboo Mom Talk with Stephanie and Colleen. I was literally laughing out loud at their latest episode!
- I'm so inspired by Sarah's weight loss journey! A little effort and motivation can go so far!
- I have been seeing Target's Pillowfort line everywhere and I'm obsessed. Is it too ridiculous to buy this stuff in advance despite not having any kids yet?
I hope you have a very wonderful weekend!

Guys Behind The Blog: February

This month's questions are about leap year. To be completely honest, I totally forgot that this was a leap year because it doesn't affect us very much. Here are Mike's thoughts about the bonus day!
Q: This year is Leap Year — what are you going to do to celebrate?
A: I don't think we'll do anything at all to celebrate the leap year. Here in Canada, February is the coldest, snowiest month and I always want it over with as soon as possible. So instead of celebrating the extra day in February, I'll probably complain about how it's been extended by another day. Bah humbug.

Q: If you could create an obscure holiday, what would it be and why?
A: If I could create an obscure holiday, it would be called Bracket Day. It would be celebrated annually in March on the first two days of the NCAA Basketball Tournament so that everybody could spend 48 hours watching basketball without pesky work interrupting it and getting in the way. I mean, who actually does work at work on those days anyways?

Q: Have you seen the movie Leap Year? If not, tell us about another romantic comedy you have seen.
A: I have not seen the movie Leap Year. I couldn't even tell you who is in it. Is it like one of those "Valentine's Day" or "New Year's Eve" movies with like 2,839,234 celebrities in them? Unlike most guys (or probably more realistically I'm one of the few who will actually admit it), I actually like RomComs. As far as movie genres go they probably fall somewhere behind teen dramas and Will Ferrell type comedy movies for me. And yes, I do have the movie viewing habits of a 14 year old. I know that really didn't answer the question, but I can't really remember the last romantic comedy we saw as we're not very big movie people in general.

Q: Tradition has it that women are supposed to propose to their men on leap day. Would you (or did you) say yes if your girl popped the question?
A: If Evelina had been the one to propose to me, I'd have said yes. I probably would have been embarrassed that I took so long that it had to come to that, but I definitely would have said yes. While I know there's no practical reason why guys are the ones who have to propose, I'm still a bit of a traditionalist in that sense. I also think you shouldn't propose without knowing what the answer will be and without having spoken about it already, so if you get to that point and your girl is still waiting so long for a proposal that she has to ask herself? Dude.... come on already!

Q: If you had to have a special event take place on leap day, what would it be (ex: wedding, birthday, birth of your child, etc)?
A: If I had to have a special event take place on a Leap Year, I would want it to be a death in the family. Sorry to be morbid, but it's going to happen eventually to everybody anyways. There's nothing worse than being reminded about a sad event that took place on that date every year. Only having to think about that date every four years wouldn't be so bad. A wedding or a birth is a fun event and something that you want to celebrate every year, so I think it would suck to only commemorate that date every four years.

12 Apps I Can't Live Without

I know I'm not the only one that's on her phone too much. By now, I think pretty much every person has a smart phone loaded with apps. But other than the obvis like iMessage, Camera, Photos, Safari, and Maps, I use a few others on the regular. None of these are paid for because I'm cheap thrifty. And I always love to see what apps are useful for other people so feel free to share your favourites in the comments!

Bloglovin - This is the app I use to read most other blogs. If you don't already use it for your blog reading, you're missing out big time. I learned about it a couple years ago and it has made things so much easier for me! I no longer have to check each blog I read to see if there's a new post up. Click here to follow Fortunate House on Bloglovin'!

Instagram - Because, duh. I am scrolling through Instagram every spare second I have. Follow me at @forunatehouseblog. I'm so visual and love to see what others are sharing.

Gmail - I keep my blog emails and personal emails separate so I use two separate apps to avoid confusing myself. I used to have use one email account for everything but that got a little overwhelming as my comments grew. I try to set aside some time every day to respond to all of your sweet comments and this app is so handy and sends me push notifications when something new pops into my inbox.

Snapchat - My favourite new social media app. I'm still learning the ins and outs of snapping, snap chatting? Idk, all I know is that it's fun! My username is @evelinaFH if you want to check out some weird filter selfies and pictures of snow with a sob emoji.

Starbucks - I pay through the app and collect stars. Stars = free drinks. Enough said.

Notes - Obviously, we are all aware of this one but I had to mention it because of how much I use it. I have a LOT of different notes on here. This is where I write everything down. Shopping lists, post ideas, to-do lists, paint colour info, my brother's passwords to things (he always forgets and calls me!), etc. If something were to happen to this app, I would seriously cry.

Duolingo - I talked about Duolingo in a different post (here.) It's basically an app that teaches you a different language. I love it because it has pronunciation, pictures, spelling and I have really improved my Spanish because of it!

Perez Hilton - Because I need to stay on top of celebrity news! Have you seen the first ever picture of Saint West? So adorable, I can't.

VSCO - I'm still learning how this one works but it really helps create beautiful photos!

Skype - This is how I communicate with my grandparents 100% of the time because they live on a different continent. Seriously, I love that Skype exists. When I was younger, I would have to write letters to my friends and family in Poland and it was impossible to have a normal conversation without spending a billion dollars on long-distance phone calls.

EskaGO - This one also connects me to my roots. It's an app that allows me to stream my favourite Polish radio station. I listen to it all the time to hear what songs are popular in Poland. But on a similar note, most radio stations have apps that you can stream from anywhere in the world!

Tetris - This is the only game that I play on my phone. I loved it when I was younger and when I found it in app-form I downloaded it immediately! SO fun. Don't judge.

So tell me, what apps can you simply not live without?

Recipe: Apple Strudel

This weekend my mom and brother came over for a little visit. And one of my favourite things to do with my mom is absorb as much of her cooking skills as possible. Her apple strudel is delicious and I was surprised at how easy it was to make!

We made it together (mainly with her overseeing and me doing, as per my request) and I will definitely be making this on my own going forward. Especially in the summer, when apples are local, fresh, and super cheap!

- 10 apples of your choice
- 1 tbsp cinnamon
- 1 box of phyllo pastry
- 100g of pecan pieces
- 18g vanilla sugar
- oil

- Lay parchment paper on cookie sheet and spread oil with pastry brush
- Cut apples into quarters and shred apples using slicing side of a grater (or cut into thin strips)
- Add cinnamon, vanilla sugar, pecans and mix with apples

- Layer 3 sheets of phyllo pastry, brushing each with oil
- Place filling in thick row on one short end of phyllo sheets, leaving about 1 inch from each end

- Fold the end of the sheet over and continue rolling until you reach the other end
- Pinch the ends together or fold them over to prevent filling from leaking out
- Place the roll on the oiled baking sheet, seam down.
- Brush entire outside of the roll with oil
- Repeat with remainder of filling and phyllo pastry

- Place in cold oven (not preheated) and turn on to 350˚F. After 25 minutes, increase oven temperature to 395˚F for another 10 minutes.

- Sprinkle icing sugar, cut, and serve with ice cream and whipped cream

And enjoy!

I definitely want to make this around Christmas time. One of these rolls would be a great hostess gift!

I hope you all had a great weekend!

Five On Friday

We finally booked our trip to Poland and I couldn't be more excited to tell my grandparents! Except I am struggling to catch them on Skype. There's a 6 hour difference between here and Poland so they are usually in bed when I get home from work. I really want to tell them the news of exactly when we will be arriving!

Mike got me a beautiful bouquet of tulips for Valentines Day and I want them to be prominent for me to look at everyday. So I put them on the coffee table. And now they block the TV. And Mike doesn't like that. And to be honest, me neither. But they're gorgeous and (sadly) temporary!

I am obsessed with the house in Blackish. All their finishes are what I would want in my house! Their door handles! I tried searching for photos of it online but haven't been able to find much. It's a great show too!

I'm loving this song!

- Christina from Carolina Charm blogged about her Supper Club and I'm obsessed with the idea. I want to pitch this to my friends to have a monthly girls dinner at each others' houses! So fun!
- Shay posted some great tips on how to save when booking flights.
- I loved reading this interview about Joy from Oh Joy. She is such an inspiration! I love her line in Target.

Quilted Crossbodies

I can't believe that tomorrow is Friday. And in light of a short week, I thought I would keep things fun and laid-back. I have been on a very long hunt to find the perfect cross body bag. I have one that is very casual but I need one for date-night and other nicer occasions.

My must-haves list isn't too long. I want it to be quilted and have gold hardware. Easy, right? Only problem is that I have found so many that now I can't decide. Girl problems. I don't even have a price range that I want to stick to. I like to invest in a bag from time to time because I buy them so rarely and take good care of them but I am totally game to spend less than $20 too. And black is so classic and goes with everything but the light colours are so perfect for spring and summer!

So here's a bunch that I have rounded up from all over the world wide web. Maybe sharing them on the blog will help me finally decide on one.

(Valentine's) Weekending

Aaaah. A three day weekend was exactly what I needed. Monday was Family Day so Mike and I both had the day off.
Backing up to Thursday, we did a little girls' night at a friend's house. Lattes and donuts were on the menu. Girl talk is seriously so fun.

On Saturday, Mike and I made a long-overdue trip across the border. It has been a second since we went to the States because our dollar has been so bad. (I'm a broken record about the exchange, I know.) We originally only planned on going to the UPS store to pick up some packages, going to Target (me), and grabbing a quick lunch. When it came time to choosing a lunch spot, we felt blah about all of our options and Crazy Mike suggested we go to Chick-Fil-A. Why is this crazy? Because the closest location is 2 hours away from Niagara Falls. In a different state. But we had nothing else going on that day, so why not? We hit the I90 and made the 100+ mile trek to Erie, PA just for lunch. And let me tell you, totally worth it. So delicious! We also bought a tub of their special sauce to take home with us.

Next up, the highly anticipated Target trip. I wanted to buy all the things. Makeup, candles, house stuff, clothes. But given that everything would cost me an additional 40%, I was a good girl and only got a few things including a utility jacket (I LOVE that jacket), a casual tee, a black tank, and a couple face masks.

Erie got hit with a bit of a blizzard, which we didn't exactly know about. The snow was intense and visibility wasn't great but we made it back home safely.

Sunday morning I prepared a cute Valentine's themed breakfast for Mike. Heart shaped pancakes and eggs with a message were on the menu. I think he liked it :)

In the evening, we were invited to Mike's cousins' house for a Valentine's dinner and game night. They spoiled us with lobster, beef wellington, chocolate-covered strawberries, cheesecake and champagne. Waaaay better than any restaurant we could have gone to!

Monday included sleeping in, cleaning, heart-shaped pizza, and the Grammys. The perfect extra day off, if you ask me.

My favourite looks from the Grammys were Ellie Goulding (the back of that dress!), Taylor Swift, Ariana Grande, and Carrie Underwood. Red and pink were very prominent on the red carpet to celebrate Valentine's Day!

I loved reading about everyone's Valentine's celebrations! Hope you had a great one!

Best Chick Flicks

So Valentine's Day is around the corner (3 days!) and one of my favourite things to celebrate is watch great lovey dove movies. Whether you're with your significant other or having a Galentines party, these movies are so fun!

I have rounded up a few of my favourites from over the years.

Dirty Dancing - My favourite movie of.all.time. It is always #1 on any movie list I ever make! Patrick Swayze was my first ever crush and I still get teary when I remember that he's no longer with us.

How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days - I can't help but quote so many lines from this movie on a regular basis. Even if my husband doesn't know what I am talking about. And that yellow dress? Stunning!

You've Got Mail - We watched this in high school quite a few times for various business classes. New York in the fall and a classic oh-wait-I-know-you-and-hate-you blind date. And in case you forgot the melodic sound of dial-up, it has that too.

Bridesmaids - This one makes me laugh to tears every time I watch it. Kristen Wigg is one of my favourite funny girls.

Legally Blonde - The perfect movie for a Galentines night. Elle Woods is perfectly positive and kind-hearted!

Mean Girls - Also one of my favourite movies and another one that I love to quote! The love story isn't as prominent here but it's a great chick-flick!

Valentine's Day - Couldn't leave this one off of the Valentine's movie list. Obviously. Plus it's amazing.

The Notebook - To be honest, I avoid this one because it makes me cry ugly tears every time I watch it. But it's such a beautiful love story. Basically any Nicholas Sparks movie will do.

What are your favourites movies to watch to celebrate love?

I hope you all have a wonderful Valentine's Day and that you're spoiled to pieces! Monday is a holiday here so we have extra long to celebrate. Have a wonderful weekend!!
