Friday Favourite: Begonias

Hurray it's Friday! And time for my favourite link up of the week!

Let's talk about flowers a little bit. I love them. But I have always only really worked with cut flowers. I kind of stink at keeping things alive in soil.

Well, this is the year that will change. I bought some planters to sit on top of my deck railing. I can't find them online at all because I bought them at a small local mom-and-pop nursery. #bloggerfail They are kind of a mix of this and this. I just love the look of coco-lined planters.

But this post is really about what goes in the planters and why. I chose tuberous begonias because they are one of my grandmother's favourite flowers. She is a very avid gardener and has these all over her garden in the ground and in planters. Gardening with her is one of my earliest memories and she is so passionate about her garden.

My grandmother (or Babcia) lives in Poland, where I was born and lived until age 5. Since then, I have only seen her a handful of times but I talk to her on a weekly basis via Skype. Oh how I love modern technology. When I was younger, calling Poland was very very expensive and I had to write letters to her through snailmail. Now things are easy. I can talk to my family every day for free! It's so amazing and I am so grateful.

I still miss them like crazy though. Having little things around the house that reminds me of them makes me feel like they are a little closer. Every time we Skype, she asks to see my begonias and always gives me tips on how to keep them healthy.

I really love being able to see these through the patio door in our dining room. I hope to make her proud and keep working on my green thumb.

Do you have a favourite flower for outside?

FH Travels: Pittsburgh (May 2015)

Mike and I drove down to Pittsburgh on Saturday morning just for the day. The GPS tells us that it takes around 4 hours to drive down without any stops or traffic.

But of course we stopped! Hello, there's a Chick-Fil-A in Erie, PA and their special sauce was calling our names. Erie has the closest Chick-Fil-A location to us so it's a mandatory stop.

Next stop: Target. I have said this a thousand times already but I am devastated that Target closed in Canada so every time I cross into the States, it must be visited. And in true Target fashion, a rug unexpectedly jumped into my shopping cart. Are we even surprised?

The main purpose of this little roadtrip was to see a Pirates game. Mike has loved the Pirates since he was little and we have been going together for a few years now. And this game also had Matt Harvey pitching for the Mets, who is one of Mike's favourite players. The weather was beautiful for a ball game and it's always fun to sit in the stands with Mike instead of watching him play from afar.

The Pirates won 8-2 and the Jolly Roger was raised! The park has such beautiful views of the skyline but I didn't remember to take pictures any until we left.

They close down the bridge closest to PNC Park (Clemente Bridge, named after a former player) for pedestrians and it basically turns into a street party every time.

The game ended around 7pm and it was time for dinner. We always aim to eat at places we don't have here in Canada and Sonic is one of our favourites. Super unhealthy day, but when in Rome...

Let's not talk about the milkshake we had for dessert. Too much junk and I have been detoxing for two days now. But so good!

And the last USA specialty location we visited was Trader Joes. I have actually never been in TJs before but I heard so much about it from other bloggers. Specifically about those Cookie Butter cookies. I can't wait to try them!

After that, we hit the road and headed home. All in all it was a very busy day but so fun to get away from home for the day. If only we were able to do this more often!

Mike had a softball game Friday night and it was a cold one! The temperatures were probably around 5°C (41°F) by the time the game finished. But I came prepared. Blankets, winter coat, Uggs, gloves, tea. I vow to never be cold again at a ball game so I don't care how ridiculous I looked!

From my experience, there is always at least one other person that isn't as prepared so I bring enough for others to share. It's totally worth it to cheer on our boys!

We drove down to Pittsburgh!! I think I'll get into more detail in a separate post because there is so much I want to talk about. We had a great time. Highlights include: Pirates game, Chick-Fil-A, Trader Joes, and listening to Worth It approximately a 100 times.

Mooooore softball! This time we weren't freezing because it was a morning game and the weather was beautiful! Except I got a little sunburned. Oops.

It's always fun to be outdoors and my best friend's hubby is on the team too so I get to hangout with her extra lots. After the game we tailgate in the parking lot and next weekend they have a double header so the team is planning a supersized tailgate party with BBQ and lots of food.

Sunday night we did groceries, laundry, gardening, and wound down with some TV. How is it Monday already? Only 34 more work hours until we get to do it all over again! The weekend countdown is on already.

Friday Favourite: Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moistuizer

Hurray it's the weekend! We had a short week this week and it flew by! I just live for the weekends when the nice weather rolls around. We have something a little different and a little special planned for this weekend and I seriously can't wait! It's going to be a good one.

My Friday Favourite item this week is my tanning cream. This one, to be exact.

I am as pasty as they come and assistance in the tanning department is necessary. I have fair, freckly, Polish skin that unfortunately doesn't love the sun. When I was young and stupid, I would go to tanning beds all the time to attempt to gain some colour. Since we all now know that's a huge no-no, these artificial creams are a good replacement.

I make sure to exfoliate my skin in the shower and apply this cream in a light layer on an every-other-day basis in the spring and summer. I just started my tanning season off a week or so ago. I still had some of this cream from last year and it works like a charm! I find the colour I get from it is very natural and even. And gradual, which is important because people at my work notice every little change. I don't want it to be obvious that my tan isn't real!

To be honest, I haven't tried any other brands of tanning creams because this one suits me just fine. Why fix what ain't broke?

Happy Memorial Day weekend to all my friends south of the border!

Philip's 10th Birthday

My brother turned 10 today!

There is a 17 year age gap between us and I remember the day he was born like it was yesterday. Now he has grown up to be a dashing young man and our relationship is so special to me. He is my only sibling and I'm pretty sure he sees me more in a mother role than in a traditional sister role. And I'm totally ok with that.

We celebrated his birthday this past weekend as a family with cake and lots of laughter. Philip requested cookies & cream ice cream cake from Dairy Queen and it was so good!

I miss seeing him everyday when we lived together before I got married. He is so loving, giving, fun and energetic and I just love him to pieces!

Happy double digits, Broski <3

Weekending: Victoria Day Long Weekend

Hello everyone! It was so good to unwind a little bit this long weekend. Let's dive right in

Mike and I spent most of Friday preparing for the long weekend. We had to clean the house and do groceries for when my family came. We pretty much ran around all afternoon after work and had dinner at Costco. Costco has amazing poutine here. Is poutine a thing in the states? It should be!

My mom and brother came on Saturday and I really love having them over. There's nothing like just hanging out with your family and taking it easy. My brother's birthday is this Wednesday and since we won't see him on Wednesday, we celebrated on Saturday. More about that tomorrow :)

Sunday we really got to work.  Our outdoor areas were in dire need of some love. We kind of suck at gardening and we pretty much haven't done anything since last summer. My mom is such a huge help and I seriously couldn't do it without her. There were dead leaves, weeds, and grossness everywhere. It felt really good to get things looking a little bit more tidy. And then I brought my mom with me to a couple nurseries to pick out some flowers to stick in pots.

Monday the yardwork continued since all the stores were closed. I really wanted to get begonias for my outdoor pots because my grandmother loves them and has dozens of them in her garden. It makes me feel a little bit closer to her despite the ocean that separates us.

And since the boys were left to fend for themselves while my mom and I were gardening, we all went out to the nearby elementary school to shoot the basketball around. Did you ever play Twenty-One growing up? We showed Philip how to play and now he says he's going to teach all of his friends! It was definitely fun to be a little active!

Hope you had a wonderful weekend!!

Friday Favourite: Sweet Blush & Agave Candle

First off, I want to say a big thank you for all the well wishes yesterday! I am feeling so much better and hopefully this is all the sickness that I will have to ensure this summer. Knock on wood.

This Friday Favourite post isn't very blogger friendly. It is a discontinued item that has no available links.

Oh well. Sorry guys.

I just had to share my love for this candle. I bought out all the remaining ones in my local Target. Actually, not so local as I have to go to a completely different country to push the happy red shopping cart. Don't even get me started on that. Sad face.

Back to the candle. It is Sweet Blush & Agave by Shades of Glass. It smells SO good. I suck at explaining smells so I'm not even going to try but I will say that I adore it. And I plan on burning it daily until the autumn scents come out in September.

So if you see this candle in your Target, give it a whiff and let me know what you think! If you love it, we are soul sisters. If you hate it, feel free to send it my way (north)! More for me haha!

Monday is a holiday here in Canadaland so I will be back to regular scheduled programming on Tuesday. My mom is coming for the long weekend and she graciously offered to help us with some desperately needed yard work. Hurray!

Have a good one!

Sick Day

Things around here have been a little rough. I don't know if the stomach flu came to visit me or if I got food poisoning.

Monday night I started to feel a little bit woozy but didn't think much of it. The next morning everything went downhill from the moment I woke up. I'll spare you the gross details.

I have been asleep for most of the past 48 hours, with zero appetite. So if nothing else, maybe I'll manage to lose a couple pounds from all of this. Mike has been so sweet and helpful, encouraging me to eat food, letting me rest, and getting me anything that I need.

I feel slightly on the mend today but still not 100%. I'm trying to take it easy and not over do anything. I really hate calling in sick to work but unfortunately this was unavoidable.

Do you have any upset tummy remedies? I'll try anything!

Weekending: Mother's Day

We had a fun cousin evening planned. Mike went to the driving range with some of his family and I stayed home with one of his younger cousins and hung out. We baked banana bread and played video games!

Afterwards we all went out for ice cream. I have to stop all this bad eating. I feel like I just have treat after treat and it's definitely taking a toll. Frappy Happy Hour didn't help last week either. But the chocolate chip cookie dough blizzard (with extra stuff) was not letting me walk out of there empty handed.

We drove down to the states for a little bit of shopping. I was really hoping to buy a couple of the colours from the new Essie Summer Collection but Target didn't have them stocked yet. I have my eye on Peach Side Babe and Sunset Sneaks. But I did manage to wipe the shelves clean of the Sweet Blush & Agave candles. I heard a rumour that this scent may be discontinued and I wasn't about to take any chances. Needless to say, we have enough candles now to last us a long while.

After shopping, we met up with Mike's parents, who were also shopping in NF, to celebrate Mother's Day. We had a nice dinner at one of our favourite American restaurants. And yes, more fruity beer was consumed. I had the watermelon and Mike tried the blueberry. So fun!

On our way home, we got some hanging baskets as our traditional Mother's Day gifts and sneakily hung them on my MIL's porch to wake up to the next day. She loved them!

Mike had a softball game on Sunday morning and we spent the rest of the day with my family. We took my mom out to lunch at Symposium Cafe. So good. And I think she loved it!

I got my favourite meal of all time: butter chicken. So good.

And with that, I am completely exhausted. The whole weekend was go,go,go. There was zero sleeping in and the list of things to do around the house is too long for me to think about. But now it's Monday and we can restart!

I hope all the mamas out there had a wonderful Mother's Day!
